Global
use of coal, oil, and natural gas was 4.7 times
higher in 2002 than in 1950. Carbon dioxide
levels in 2002 were 18 % higher than in 1960,
and estimated to be 31% higher since the onset
of the Industrial Revolution in 1750. Scientists
have linked the warming trend during the twentieth
century to the buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping
gasses.
