DEQ STORM DAMAGE STATUS REPORT 5/7/99
Three communities are without drinking water. They are Marshall (a small community near Enid), Southern Hills Estates (a small community near Tuttle), and the Town of Mulhall. DEQ water quality engineers and field staff are working with all three communities to get their water systems back on line. All wastewater systems in the counties struck by the storms are in operation.
As power is restored to more areas and people are returning to their homes, we continue to be concerned about possible contamination of private water wells. We have a simple factsheet available to
The method(s) for debris disposal are under discussion for the Oklahoma City metro area and should be finalized by late this afternoon. Actual debris disposal will probably not begin for a while due to the continued search for missing persons. Cleanup methods outside the metro are being developed on a case by case basis.
A special team from the federal Environmental Protection Agency regional office in Dallas is operating from offices in the DEQ building. They have developed a list of potential sources and locations of hazardous materials. Teams of environmental specialists from the DEQ and EPA are contacting each potential source of hazardous materials to verify that nothing was released during or after the storms. As of this afternoon, NO hazardous chemicals were released as a result of Monday nights storms. We will keep you updated on this issue.
