Bridge Creek
  • 5/6/99 DEQ local staff representatives met with local officials.
  • 5/7/99 DEQ local staff attended meeting with Senator Martin yesterday regarding clean-up of area. Another meeting will be held this evening to update clean-up options and recent information on FEMA assistance.
  • 5/10/99 DEQ local staff is meeting with Grady County officials concerning options.
  • 5/11/99 Local officials to meet with FEMA 5/14/99 to discuss disposal options.
  • 5/12/99 Grady County Commissioners have contracted with private company to remove and dispose of debris. Burning of trees is being considered.
  • 5/13/99 Has begun hauling debris to a permitted landfill.
  • 5/17/99 Debris is being moved to the county right-of-way then picked up by the contractor and disposed at a permitted landfill. Some burning of trees and limbs is being conducted by individual home owners.
  • 5/18/99 Debris removal is continuing.
  • 5/26/99 Debris removal is continuing and is approx. 75% complete. Most of public rights of way are cleaned up, and next step is to clean up creek and hard to get areas.
  • 6/4/99 Debris clean-up is approx. 90% complete. Natural Resources Conservation Service will begin clean-up of the creeks and ponds when debris removal is complete.
  • 6/11/99 Debris clean up is approx. 90-95% complete. Household haz. wastes and metals are being segregated for proper disposal. Clean-up anticipated to be completed 6/20/99.
Choctaw
  • 5/10/99 Burning debris, but separating out haz. materials.
  • 5/13/99 No longer burning. Contracted with Corps of Engineers for debris removal, which began 5/12/99. Debris is being transported to the Corps staging area at I-240 and Bryant. EPA has contacted City regarding a household hazardous waste collection day.
  • 5/14/99 Private contractors have been obtained to handle debris segregation. DEQ fliers regarding household hazardous waste segregation have been provided to shelters. Initial reviews by EPA/DEQ has shown that debris segregation/removal activities are being conducted in an environmentally safe manner. Review of businesses with potentially hazardous chemicals has shown minimal, if any, releases to the environment.

  • 5/5/99 Midwest City is considering including them in their contract with Waste Management of Oklahoma, Inc. to take care of their storm debris. County assessors are out doing house to house and business to business surveys, assessing damage. DEQ requested that they make note of businesses that had hazardous chemicals stored, and advised they could contact DEQ for assistance if necessary. DEQ reviewing lists of businesses in the area that have haz. chemicals and is planning a field evaluation of these to determine any assistance that may be needed.

DEQ also contacting businesses in the area that may have hazardous chemicals. Indications are that few with hazardous chemicals were affected. Attempting to contact those businesses, and site visits will be done for those that sustained damage.

Oklahoma City
  • 5/13/99 City is separating household hazardous wastes at the Corps of Engineers staging area near I-240 & Bryant. Recyclables are also being separated while other debris is being ground and landfilled. Corps of Engineers debris removal began 5/12/99.
