  • 5/6/99 DEQ local staff representatives met with local officials.
  • 5/7/99 DEQ local staff attended meeting with Senator Martin yesterday regarding clean-up of area. Another meeting will be held this evening to update clean-up options and recent information on FEMA assistance.
  • 5/10/99 DEQ local staff is meeting with Grady County officials concerning options.
  • 5/11/99 Local officials to meet with FEMA 5/14/99 to discuss disposal options.

  • 5/10/99 Burning debris, but separating out haz. materials.
  • 5/13/99 No longer burning. Contracted with Corps of Engineers for debris removal, which began 5/12/99. Debris is being transported to the Corps staging area at I-240 and Bryant. EPA has contacted City regarding a household hazardous waste collection day.
  • 5/14/99 Private contractors have been obtained to handle debris segregation. DEQ fliers regarding household hazardous waste segregation have been provided to shelters. Initial reviews by EPA/DEQ has shown that debris segregation/removal activities are being conducted in an environmentally safe manner. Review of businesses with potentially hazardous chemicals has shown minimal, if any, releases to the environment.

  • 5/14/99 Debris removal has not yet begun. Debris being collected on right of way.
  • 5/17/99 Contract with Corps of Engineers has been signed, and removal should begin later this week.
  • 5/19/99 All debris has been placed along rights of way for Corps of Engineers to collect. Town staging area is not being used.
Del City
  • 5/5/99 Midwest City is considering including them in their contract with Waste Management of Oklahoma, Inc. to take care of their storm debris. County assessors are out doing house to house and business to business surveys, assessing damage. DEQ requested that they make note of businesses that had hazardous chemicals stored, and advised they could contact DEQ for assistance if necessary. DEQ reviewing lists of businesses in the area that have haz. chemicals and is planning a field evaluation of these to determine any assistance that may be needed.
  • 5/7/99 DEQ requested that county tax assessors provide a list of all businesses affected so that DEQ can assist with waste issues. DEQ also contacting businesses in the area that may have hazardous chemicals. Indications are that few with hazardous chemicals were affected. Attempting to contact those businesses, and site visits will be done for those that sustained damage.

  • 5/7/99 3 staging areas identified; near City water well, approx. 1 mile north of town, and on Okla. Dept. of Transportation property.
  • 5/10/99 City has contracted with Corps of Engineers for debris disposal. Preliminary plans are to use an air curtain incinerator. City is to obtain permission for the burn pit and a disposal site for the ash. Contractor is to dispose of all material that does not burn.
  • 5/14/99 Debris continuing to be collected at the staging areas. When removal begins, debris will be shipped to the Corps of Engineers staging area at I-240 and Bryant in OKC.

  • 5/5/99 City working on contract with Waste Management of Oklahoma, Inc. for disposal of all storm debris. Waste Management of Oklahoma, Inc. claims can have streets cleaned within 2 weeks. All waste to be landfilled, no burning anticipated.

Waste being stacked for transport to staging area. Trees & limbs are being separated from construction/demolition waste. Waiting on FEMA.
  • 5/7/99 DEQ local staff reviewed and accepted current waste staging area. Waste segregated into 4 piles, brush, construction/demolition debris, rock, metal. Also visited 2 possible burial sites, but none finalized as of yet.

  • 5/10/99 City has decided not to burn any material at this time. Currently meeting with DEQ local staff.

Volunteers will begin tomorrow to assist with moving debris from private property to roadside, and City will haul debris to permitted landfill for disposal. City still plans on burning trees, though some may be cut into fire wood.
