Groundwater is constantly recharged through rain. Changes in the use of the land or changes to the surface of the land can affect the quality of water eventually reaching the aquifer. To detect if natural or manmade influences have altered water quality, private wells should be chemically analyzed periodically.
Chemical analyses of private water wells can be obtained by taking a sample to your local Department of Environmental Quality or by sending a sample of well water to the State Environmental Laboratory, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, 707 North Robinson, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73101-1677. An analytical fee of $150.57 will be charged. Please send a check or money order made out to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). A one-half gallon sample should be collected in a thoroughly clean, plastic container, with a screw top lid (glass may break in route to the lab).
Sample information needed:
1. Individual's name and mailing address
2. City and county
3. Date collected
4. Who the well supplies
5. Legal description of the well location (section, township, range)
6. Well depth
7. Any other information or problems that may be important
Sampling procedure:
1. Take the sample from the cold water tap.
2. Let the water run from the tap three to five minutes, then collect the sample.
Samples are routinely analyzed for total hardness, total alkalinity, nitrate-nitrite, chloride, sulfate, total dissolved solids, pH and specific conductance. If you suspect that you have some special problem, call the State Environmental Laboratory, (405) 702-1000, for information on collection of an appropriate sample.
