VAC - Pollution Prevention

VAC Corporation (formerly Ted Davis Manufacturing) is a manufacturer and major worldwide supplier of disk drive components. Approximately 200 persons are employed at this facility. Over a six month period process changes and equipment modifications were instituted. These changes were accomplished using a team approach (management, quality control, production, procurement, environment and safety all represented).

Improvements

In 1992 Freon TMS was the chosen cleaner (3500 - 4000 pounds of per week). With equipment modifications and process changes this system was eliminated and two aqueous cleaning lines were installed.

Line 1: ultrasonic wash and ultrasonic rinse before drying.

Line 2: a conveyor moves parts through a pre-soap, wash, rinse, virgin deionized water rinse and drying cycles.

Savings/Benefits

HFC emissions eliminated (200,000 pounds per year to 0 in 1996)
Waste water discharged directly to POTW
Elimination of waste management costs associated with waste water discharge
No loss of quality or productivity
Cost savings of $20,000 per week
