Amoco Production Company A major operator in the exploration and production of natural gas in the eastern Oklahoma region, Amoco operates 9 separate compression facilities with varying compression capabilities. The use of chemicals in Amoco’s workplace was significant and necessary

Improvements Amoco maintained a large inventory of chemicals. The management of these chemicals and the resulting waste streams required changing the existing system. Some of these changes were:

creation of data base of all chemicals purchased & used
new policy instituted for procurement of chemicals
improved tracking of materials

Benefits

These improvements resulted in:

elimination of 32 unnecessary chemicals and consumer products
using alternative packaging and eliminating 50% of chemical deliveries
improved regulatory compliance
90% reduction of listed hazardous wastes from 1995 to 1996
improved worker health and safety
